Why Families Love their Slow Cooker.
My grandmother and mother loved cooking and they were the best in their field. I think you already knew that, huh? Our grandmother lives just three hours away from ours. We frequently visit her. When the whole family gathers around for a celebration, Grandma would prepare her original recipe that we loved so much. Something this great must be shared to the whole world and I want to start with you – my grandma’s recipe, City Chicken.
On Sundays, Grandma would serve us City Chicken for lunch. Every morning on Sundays, the appetizing smell of Grandma’s cooking used to make us get up early, eager to have a taste on what was specially prepared for us. Cooking was Grandma’s way of imparting her heart to her loved ones. All the time we knew whenever Grandma’s cooking, it’s even more special for the reason that it’s always been our most loved City Chicken! As we played in the yard, climbing trees with all the cousins and family members, she would be in the kitchen preparing to feed a family of anticipating, hungry people.
And when she would stick her head out the door and yell, “Lunch is ready!” we kids would run over each other to get to the table. Aside from the dialogues with the relatives while gathered in the dining table, it was our grandmother’s cooking that everyone was eager to relish. Laid out as a feast on that old metal table of the 50′s-60′s era was City Chicken, macaroni and cheese, snow peas and little new potatoes in a cream sauce, homemade bread, salad, and mashed potatoes. Above all, it was quality time for the family. Even if we ate on dishes that didn’t complement our spoons, forks and even our glasses (the blue one’s my favorite), or the cloth on the table was already discolored, the important thing was we were having fun as a family. All that mattered was the love of the family enjoyed with appetizing treats and great laughs.
I don’t mind if the City Chicken consumes a lot of time in the making because it’s all worth the effort and wait! Cubes of beef, pork and veal of the same quantities were skewered one after the other. A dash of salt and pepper added zest on each skewer of meat, then dunked in an egg-milk mix and removed, placed on a plate of crushed crackers, rolled until all the areas are covered and then cooked on a hot frying pan until it becomes faintly brown. When all the meat skewers had been fried, everything were heaped up into a roaster with cover and placed inside the oven and cooked until the meat was well done, that the meat detaches from the skewers. She also tried cooking the City Chicken on the electric roaster oven later on and the result was still very scrumptious. Oh – and did I mention her macaroni and cheese? I know now that her macaroni and choose was not the most favored among nutritionists, but it still was the best macaroni and cheese there was. Well, in comparison to her City Chicken, this was number two to tastiness. Grandma included this so-called hoop cheese (it made a distinct taste) in her mixture of macaroni with a slight amount of bacon grease and then covered with extra cheese. The slightly burnt rim part of the macaroni and cheese is where I mostly liked to munch!
Even if the preparations take many hours, however it is cooked, in a conventional way or modern way, the outcomes are no different, always. However, there was just a little something extra my grandmother put into hers. Grandma had something very special in the way she cooked her food. Grandma had a lot of it!
