Who Was The First To Invent Potato Salad?
One Of My favorite things to eat is Potato Salad, preferably Ribs and potato salad. On a nice summer afternoon surrounded by family and friends, I remember that an interesting conversation stirred up about what type of potato salad recipe is the best and who preferred what type. That got me thinking about the origin of potato salad and how many different variations have turned up since then.
I found that the potato was discovered in South America by Spanish explorers who brought it back with them to their native lands in the 16th century. Merchants and farmers were the reason that this vegetable became acquainted with Europe.
A good place to start on finding where the potato salad came from would be Germany, a country abundant in potato’s and plenty of recipes to prepare them, its nearly sure to be one of the first to prepare the food. By way of the second half of the Nineteenth century America became familiar with potato salad probably by way of German immigrants.
Their are an assortment of versions of potato salad, European form is offered warmed up and this is also referred to as German potato salad. This type won’t consist of any mayonnaise but will typically have vinegar, onions and bacon.
The American version of potato salad will have mayonnaise as opposed to the European or German version but will also contain many other ingredients depending on who is making the dish. Ingredients ranging from celery stalk, pickles, red peppers, and the list can go on and on, its a fun dish to make and my favorite because of the wide range of things that you can put into it and basically come up with your own favorite style.
Certainly the potato salad is really an ageless classic, offered at picnics, celebrations and events. It’s been around for many, many years and definitely will still attract many to the table for countless years ahead.
