The Dilemmas Of Biodegradable Packaging

Although incredibly useful, products such as plastics and foam materials such as styrofoam are very dangerous to the environment. But since there is still a need for something to pack items in, the use of biodegradable packaging is highly recommended by green living experts.

The term biodegradable was not defined in the US for many years of its use. During this period of time, all sorts of products and containers were labeled as such when they were not. Recently, the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has sued some companies for using the term in a misleading manner, though, and the term has taken on more meaning.

Just because a material biodegrades does not mean that it is environmentally safe. Some products that break down actually produce secondary products that are more toxic than the originals. Many legitimate and safe products still will not break down without the proper environment, which generally includes air, water, and microbial access. This is a condition not met in many landfills, when the products are packed in under other trash.

A composting program that accepts green packing materials is a requirement in order to get the most out of them. Some cities offer these now, and composting offers a chance for most of these green products to return to the earth in the manner intended. If green materials are simply thrown in the trash, they often wind up buried and do not degrade as planned.

Working towards a goal of using more and more biodegradable packaging is still important, though. Composting programs are being created every day, and even those materials that end up in the landfill are likely to eventually receive a chance to degrade as they are supposed to. When that time comes, they will be able to break down into natural materials very rapidly.

The use of green products in every industry, but especially those that use a lot of them such as food packers, is essential to the future health of the planet. When major consumers of packing materials buy green, they put pressure on the manufacturers to make more green materials. This in turn makes it easier to everyone to find these green products.
