How to Sharpen a Knife Easily
Knives are very important tools in the kitchen. Without one, your kitchen is not a kitchen at all. It’s impossible to do anything in the kitchen without a knife, which is why we always need to have one. The big problem with knives is that they get dull easily, and then it’s impossible working with them. Instead of throwing your knife in the trash though, sharpen the blade using these easy to follow steps.
A honing steel (also called a sharpening steel) is a very common tool used for sharpening knives. It is also effective for smoothing out the blade’s edge.
To start, hold the honing steel downwards using your left hand while holding the knife with your right hand. Place your left hand firmly on a cutting board and then place the knife across the steel with the part closest to the handle touching it.
Incline the knife so that the edge is touching the steel’s shaft. Ideally, the angle between the steel and the knife should at least be 22.5 degrees. Once this angle is reached, pull the knife towards you by sliding it along the steel’s shaft.
Keep on sliding the knife in this direction for about ten to fifteen more times before turning the knife to the other side.
Although sharpening knives is a very easy task to do, you still need to be very careful if you don’t want it to cut your hand.
By sharpening knives instead of throwing them away, you get to save yourself hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year. It’s always best to buy a really good set of knives today (at least you can just keep on sharpening them and keep them for years) rather than buy a cheap set and then having to resort to throwing them because they’re not any good even when you sharpen them.
