Edible Nuptials – Decorating A Wedding Cake
Food is undeniably part of our culture and society. Whether it’s a funeral, the super bowl, an anniversary, or a birthday, food plays a major part in any social gathering. Weddings take the cake though when it comes to presenting and showing off decorated sweets as part of the celebration. A wedding is in essence a ritual dating back to ancient times that symbolizes two people staying together for the rest of their lives, or hopefully at least the next 2-3 years. In this article I’ll go over some of the key points about preparing a wedding cake, which is the main attraction at any wedding. Most cultures consider it bad luck NOT to have a piece of cake during the celebration! It’s also bad luck to show up to the reception wearing your batman costume.
There are specific, traditional rules for cutting the wedding cake. For instance, it is traditional, at a wedding reception, to cut the wedding cake just before dessert is served, if the wedding reception occurs during the lunch or dinner hour. However, if the reception is held during tea or cocktails, the cake is cut just after all of the guests arrive. The bride and groom should cut and eat the first slice together, as a symbol of their choice to be together and also their lifelong refusal to go along with the Atkins Diet. The rest of the cake is sliced by the maid of honor or a family member and everyone else in the wedding party can fight over it, with fists or even silverware.
Don’t get overwhelmed by choosing a wedding cake. It doesn’t have to be a difficult chore. Tradition says you have to have a white cake with white frosting. But this is the modern age! Couples are choosing their favorite flavors and colors, and bakeries and cake decorators are offering a larger selection to choose from. From Fruit, Chocolate, Jalapeno, to hot mustard, modern weddings can be crazy like their cakes.
There are wedding cakes out there that have a different flavor for each layer. How crazy is that? Frosting comes in different colors and flavors, like lemon, mocha, chocolate, e.t.c. You can use all the flavors at once, if your so inclined. Wedding cakes should have many extra design elements like fruit and real edible flowers. Nothing that will get that groom high, though!
Everyone looks forward to seeing the cake cut at a wedding. Then sharing it with the couple as a symbol of hope that they will be prosperous and throw lots of pool parties and possibly lend us money.
There are several roads to becoming a master cake decorator. There are hundreds of books and e-books out there that will give you the basics. There are also DVD’s and youtube videos you can find that give you instructions using a step-by-step program.
However I think the best way to learn, is to simply take a class. The immediate feedback from the teachers is priceless! There is no faster way to learn then be corrected in real-time as your decorating your cakes.
