To many, nothing can be more satisfying than a cup of coffee. To most people, their day starts only after a cup of coffee in the morning. Some of today’s coffee is a far cry from the original drink and is enjoyed by a growing number of people. It has kept its basic characteristics since it was first known to man. It might sound surprising but statistics say an average person consumes over 10 pounds of coffee in a year and about half of the US population partakes of the beverage – worldwide yearly consumption adds up to over 400 billion cups! Coffee is drank mostly at breakfast, and 35% drink their coffee black. In the U.S., coffee’s popularity can be attributed to the Boston Tea Party when there was a concerted effort to drink coffee instead of tea, which until then was the favored drink of many.

Columbia and Brazil accounts for the production of 3/4′s of the world coffee and it is mostly handpicked there. Coffee is prepared from the seeds of a berry plant, and unroasted coffee beans will not spoil for up to two years. Coffee is best when consumed directly after roasting as the flavor decreases once you roast it. Refrigeration does not help in keeping them fresh as most people believe and it might even taste strange as the roasted coffee will readily absorb the flavors from other foods. The coffee beans have different varieties and flavors and the growing conditions affect the flavor of the coffee.

It will take 100 Arabica shrubs to produce about 130 pounds of coffee beans. Drinking coffee as refreshment is also claimed to have medicinal effects because coffee contains antioxidants that will inhibit some diseases. The risk of diabetes and Parkinson’s disease is thought to have decreased by drinking coffee. It is also known to help fight or retard tooth decay. Some if its antioxidants stimulate enzymes that may protect against colon cancer. Of course coffee contains the stimulant caffeine that will keep you active and on the go. It also relieves symptoms of asthma by dilating bronchial tubes and gets rid of tension headaches.
